Possibility. A simple word. To the point. No frills. And yet, it’s one I haven’t heard used very much lately. In my book of prose, “The Cage of the Soul” that was published several years ago and remains available on Amazon and Audible, I penned a small, modest piece with that name.

Possibility. It suggests a sense of hope. Of discovery. Of the unknown tinged with positivity and open skies and determination. Of moving forward without fear or favor over mountains that from a distance appear unattainable. Of overcoming even reluctance and apprehension.

How often lately have you felt the urge to choose something, do something, and then thought, “Oh, maybe not. Not now. Not while all this uncertainty tinged with fear swirls around the zeitgeist. Keep my head down. Do what I know. Just keep trying to move forward without attracting too much attention or contention.”

And when aging enters the picture and gets added into that whirlpool, and things begin to head for the floor and hope starts to dissolve into resolve to just try to hold onto the known for as long as you can, possibility is often shelved and replaced with predictability and choices that are safe, boring, even dangerous.

When that ennui takes over, then dreaming often fades away too, and life turns into a mindless twenty-four hour wash, rinse and dry cycle of nothingness.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Dreams are free. So is hope. And possibility.
